MUTARE IN CRISIS

Water pipeline burst leaves city dry

Mutare, a city in eastern Zimbabwe, is facing a severe water crisis due to a major burst in its main water pipeline. The 700mm Odzani-Christmas Pass pipeline burst has severely impacted water delivery to the Christmas Pass balancing tanks, leaving residents without access to clean water for days.

The Mutare City Council has deployed water bowsers to distribute water to affected areas, but the situation remains dire. Residents are advised to use water sparingly, and the council is working tirelessly to repair of the pipeline within 72 hours. However, the prolonged water shortage has raised concerns about the risk of waterborne diseases, particularly cholera and typhoid, in a region already battling a cholera outbreak.

The water crisis is not new to Mutare, with the city experiencing similar challenges in the past due to technical issues and infrastructure problems. In 2022, residents expressed frustration over prolonged water rationing, with some areas going without water for weeks. The city's water infrastructure has been under strain, and experts have warned that Mutare may face serious water shortages in the next 10 years due to climate change-induced droughts. The current water crisis has sparked fears of a public health disaster, and authorities are urged to take swift action to restore water supplies and prevent further health risks. The situation highlights the need for sustainable water management practices and infrastructure development to mitigate the impact of future water crises.
