Charity Jori Vendors clash with police 14-03-25
Mutare, Zimbabwe - A tense confrontation erupted between vendors and municipal police in Mutare's Central Business District yesterday. The drama began when municipal police attempted to collect goods from vendors operating without licenses.
According to eyewitnesses, the vendors resisted the police's efforts, leading to a heated exchange. Some vendors allegedly threw stones and other objects at the police, who responded with baton charges."I was just trying to make a living, and then the police came and started taking our things," said one vendor, who wished to remain unkown. "We weren't going to let them take everything from us."The municipal police claimed that the vendors were operating illegally and posing a health risk to consumers."We're not targeting the vendors, but we need to ensure that they're operating within the law," said a municipal police spokesperson. "We'll continue to enforce the bylaws and maintain order in the city."The incident has sparked concerns about the livelihoods of vendors and the role of municipal police in regulating informal trade.
