Redwing Mine Tragedy:Unresolved and ongoing
Charity Jori Redwing Mine Tragedy 25 -03 -25
Redwing Mine in Penhalonga, Mutare, has become a symbol of tragedy and lawlessness, with reports of numerous unreported deaths from gas exposure and tunnel collapses. The mine, owned by Metallon Corporation, was placed under corporate rescue in 2020 due to unpaid debts and wage arrears. However, despite concerns over safety and environmental degradation, the mine has continued to operate
The situation took a dire turn in January 2023 when the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) closed the mine due to 26 fatalities in a single month. However, mining operations continued under Betterbrands Mining, a company linked to Zanu-PF MP Scott Sakupwanya. This has led to reports of corruption, bribery, and cover-ups involving police officers and Zanu-PF officials .
The mine has become a hub for artisanal mining, with thousands of miners working in dangerous conditions. Leaked rescue team reports reveal numerous unreported deaths from gas exposure and tunnel collapses. Government authorities, police, and mining officials have not responded to questions about the mine's operations.
The lack of accountability and regulation has created an environment where miners are forced to work in hazardous conditions, with little regard for their safety or well-being. The situation at Redwing Mine is a stark reminder of the need for greater transparency and accountability in Zimbabwe's mining industry.
As of March 24, 2025, the situation at Redwing Mine remains unresolved, with thousands of miners continuing to work in dangerous conditions.
